Who we are

We are a highly focused and impactful charity, supporting research and teaching into disorders of the brain and nervous system, since 1971.

Helping people with neurological conditions

Neurological conditions can affect anyone and you never know when your life, or that of a loved one, might be irreparably changed by something devastating like a head trauma. Funding research into new potential therapies could help thousands of people with neurological issues recover their lives.

Novel and leading edge treatments

The work that we fund investigates potential novel treatments, often innovative and leading edge. But credibility and collaboration are also key, and so research is disseminated and shared so that researchers and doctors across the world can build upon ideas and approaches.

Board of Trustees

Dr Rowan Hardy is an Associate Professor in Steroid Metabolism and Signalling at the University of Birmingham, specialising in models of inflammatory disease. His research explores how we can prevent complication of disease including bone loss and muscle wasting that lead to devastating falls and fractures in vulnerable patients.

Dr Olivia Grech is a neuroscientist at the University of Birmingham. Her research focuses on understanding the causes of raised pressure in the brain and developing new treatments. She brings scientific expertise and a passion for improving patient care to her role as a trustee.

Dr Tom Hayton is a neurologist at University Hospitals Birmingham. He has a specialist interest in Neuroinflammatory and white matter diseases. He teaches at University of Birmingham and Aston University.

George Tsermoulas is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Birmingham, with specialist interests in CSF disorders, skull base and pituitary surgery, and neuro-oncology. He trained in Greece, the UK, and Canada, and is also actively involved in global health work.

Dr Ben Wakerley is a consultant neurologist with a specialist interest in headache and is based at University Hospitals Birmingham. He is also a clinical associate professor at the University of Birmingham. His main research interests are Medication-Overuse Headache and Migraine in Pregnancy.

Helping to support others

We are based in the West Midlands, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Donating to this fund could help local patients today, but also future generations of recipients of neuroscience healthcare worldwide. Over 50 years of supporting research and teaching, the fund has many successful projects such as those highlighted on our “What we do” page.

If you can support us you will continue to help expert researchers explore these new treatments, that could enable someone you know to recover. Help us make a difference by donating here.

Examples of research that we fund

Using Light to Help the Brain Heal after Traumatic Injury

“In the management of moderate to severe head injury there are currently no treatment methods that directly aid in the healing or repair of brain tissue. Previous support from the fund considered the application of near infra-red light, which has demonstrated significant benefits in healing in a number of different tissues throughout the body including brain tissue. Dose and character of the light are critical to investigate in order to identify the optimal dose for a ‘direct to brain’ light therapy treatment and this further project will investigate this.”

Supporting “Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Disorder Day” and Patients with Severe Headaches

The fund supported the Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Disorder Day, a UK symposium showcasing clinical approaches and research being conducted on idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and disorders of Intracranial Pressure (ICP) by both clinicians and translational scientists. Some of the topics explored by national and international speakers included Headache management in IIH, Telemetric ICP monitoring, Bariatric procedures and weight management in IIH, and Ultrasound guided Lumbar puncture (LP).
